Can I apply to extend my period of stay online through HiKorea?
Based on: HiKorea 'Immigration/Stay Guide' (출입국/체류안내) (revision date not confirmed) · Ministry of Justice HiKorea Customer Center Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) (checked 2026.10.29) · Ministry of Justice HiKorea Civil Application > e-Civil Service guide and attachment 'Accounts usable for HiKorea e-Civil Service' (checked 2026.10.29) · Government24 (정부24) civil service guides 'Alien Registration', 'Reissuance of Alien Registration Card', 'Application for Certificate of Visa Issuance Confirmation', 'Permit for Extension of Stay Period', 'Certificate of Alien Registration Facts' (last revised 2026.7.27; checked 2026.10.30)Yes, you can apply online for a stay extension through HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr) e-Civil Service (전자민원). But not every status of stay is eligible. Only statuses open to e-Civil Service can use it.
If your status of stay is open to e-Civil Service, you can apply online. For registered foreigners' extension of stay permits, extensions for overseas Koreans (F-4) who have reported their residence, and extensions for short-term stayers, both e-Civil Service and visit reservations are available. International students and language trainees can have the school's international student officer apply for them.
💡 Application period and account
- Application period: Apply from 4 months before your current period of stay ends until the day it ends.
- Online deadline: Registered foreigners and F-4 residence reporters must apply online by the day before the expiry date. This is one day different from visit applications, so it is safer to apply early.
- Application hours: You can apply through e-Civil Service on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. If your expiry date falls on a weekend, apply before that.
- Account to use: Use the foreigner's own account or an administrative agent's account. If the foreigner is under 17, a parent's ID can also be used.
- Fee: A general extension costs 60,000 KRW, and marriage immigrants (F-6) pay 30,000 KRW. Online, you can pay by card, bank transfer, or mobile phone payment.
- Processing time: 15 days in total for general cases, and 60 days in total for cases that need an investigation.
⚠️ Things to note
- A permit granted online has the same effect as one granted in person. Once approved, print the permit confirmation from [e-Civil Service Status (전자민원 현황)].
- If you apply after your expiry date has passed, you may be fined. If you apply before it expires, you can stay while you wait for the result.
- If your status is not eligible for online application, make a visit reservation on HiKorea and go to the immigration office (출입국·외국인관서) that has jurisdiction over your address.
To check whether your status of stay is eligible online, see the HiKorea e-Civil Service guide or call 1345.
