‹ Korea Visa & Stay Q&A for Foreigners
Extension

What documents are required in common when extending your period of stay?

Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부) 「Guide Manual for Stay Civil Applications by Status」 (as of 2026.11.02) · 「Enforcement Rule of the Immigration Act」 (출입국관리법 시행규칙) [Annex 5-2] (Ministry of Justice Ordinance No. 1172, effective 2026.10.23.)

The documents required for every status when extending your period of stay are the application form, passport, Alien Registration Card, and fee. Other documents differ by status of stay.

Prepare these documents first

  • Basic documents (application form, passport, registration card, fee) — The legal fee for an extension is 60,000 KRW. For marriage immigrants (F-6), it is 30,000 KRW. For corporate investment (D-8), it is waived.
  • Foreigner occupation report — If your status of stay allows you to work, you report your occupation when you apply for an extension.
  • Annual income amount — Write it in the 'annual income amount' box of the integrated application form (report form). Overseas Koreans (F-4) do not have to write it. Information is linked with the National Tax Service, so you do not need to submit a separate income certificate.
  • Certificate of enrollment — This applies to children aged 6 to 18. Write the school name in the 'school enrollment' box of the integrated application form and submit the certificate. If the child does not attend school, mark 'not enrolled'.

Application steps

  1. Apply from 4 months before your period of stay expires until the expiry date.
  2. Apply online at HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr), or book a visit to the immigration office (출입국) in charge of your home address.
  3. Submit the additional documents for your status. For example, corporate investment (D-8) requires a business registration certificate and tax documents, and trade management (D-9) requires a certificate of employment and documents proving the business place exists.

⚠️ Points to note

  • Documents issued abroad need an apostille or consular confirmation.
  • You must submit original documents. For an online application, your own signature confirming the copy matches the original replaces this.
  • You do not need to submit documents that the officer in charge can check through shared e-government information. However, if you do not consent, you must submit them.
  • If you have unpaid health insurance premiums, the permitted period may be shortened to 6 months or less. Pay in advance and keep the receipt.
