‹ Korea Visa & Stay Q&A for Foreigners
When can I apply to extend my E-3 research stay period, and what documents do I need?
Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부) 「Stay Civil Service Guide Manual by Visa Status」 (as of 2026.11.02) · HiKorea 「Immigration/Stay Guide」 (revision date not confirmed)You can apply to extend your E-3 stay period from 4 months before your stay period expires until the day it expires. If you apply before it expires, you can stay while you wait, even if the result comes late.
Just prepare these documents
- Basic documents (application form, passport, Alien Registration Card, fee)
- Employment contract or confirmation of expected appointment — this shows you are still working
- Documents about the establishment of your employer — whichever applies: business registration certificate, certified corporate registry, or documents proving a research institution
- Proof of your residence — lease contract or confirmation of housing provided
- Official invitation letter in the name of the inviting research institution — only for those it applies to, such as visiting researchers
- Document proving your employment contract with your original organization — only for those it applies to, such as visiting researchers
- Bank balance certificate from a Korean or foreign bank — only for those it applies to
Steps to apply
- Prepare the documents above. The extension fee is usually 60,000 KRW.
- Visit the immigration office (출입국·외국인관서) that has jurisdiction over your address and apply. Some visa types allow a proxy to apply, and some do not.
- You must be in Korea on the day you apply. You cannot apply or use a proxy from abroad.
- After review, your stay period is extended if you receive approval.
⚠️ Things to note
- If you apply after the expiry date, a fine will be charged. If your expiry date is close, apply quickly.
- If you changed your workplace, reporting the change or addition of workplace alone does not extend your stay period. You need to apply for an extension separately.
- If your remaining stay period is shorter than [the changed employment contract period + 1 month], it will be extended to that date. If it is longer, it may be shortened to that date.
- If you have unpaid health insurance premiums, the approved period may be shortened to 6 months or less. Pay in advance and keep the receipt.
