Extension

When can I apply to extend my stay under D-7 (intra-company transferee), and what documents do I need?

Based on: Ministry of Justice, 「Guide Manual for Stay Civil Applications by Status」 (as of 2026.11.02) · 「Enforcement Rule of the Immigration Act」 [Appendix 5-2] (Ministry of Justice Ordinance No. 1172, effective 2026.10.23) · 「Enforcement Decree of the Immigration Act」 (Presidential Decree No. 36728, effective 2026.10.2)

You can apply for a D-7 extension from 4 months before your stay period ends until the expiry date. If you apply before it expires, you can stay while you wait, even if the result comes late. The documents differ for D-7 type "가" (dispatched worker) and type "나" (employee of an overseas branch of a listed company or public institution).

Just prepare these documents

Type 가 (essential specialist dispatched from a foreign head office or branch)

  • Basic documents (application form, passport, registration card, fee)
  • Dispatch order (issued by the foreign head office) or certificate of employment from the foreign head office — proves you were dispatched
  • Copy of the permit to set up a domestic branch or liaison office (issued by a foreign exchange bank) — shows your workplace in Korea is legal
  • Proof of operating funds brought into Korea (foreign currency purchase certificate, lease contract, etc.) — confirms the business is running normally
  • Personal tax payment proof — one of these: original certificate of personal tax payment, last year's withholding tax receipt for earned income, or certificate of income amount
  • Proof of your residence — lease contract, housing confirmation letter, utility bill receipts, etc.

Type 나 (person dispatched to the head office from an overseas branch of a listed company or public institution)

  • Basic documents (application form, passport, registration card, fee)
  • Certificate of employment
  • Tax payment proof
  • Proof of your residence

Steps to apply

  1. Start preparing your documents 4 months before expiry.
  2. Book an appointment on HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr), or visit the immigration office (출입국·외국인사무소) that covers your address.
  3. The fee for a stay extension is 60,000 KRW. Online, pay by card, bank transfer, or mobile phone payment. In person, you usually pay with revenue stamps.
  4. If approved, your new stay period is written on your Alien Registration Card.

💡 Good to know

  • D-7 can be granted for up to 3 years at a time.
  • Even if you are paid by your foreign head office, you are usually subject to income tax. If you joined a tax association for monthly withholding (을근납세조합), submit the Class B earned income withholding receipt issued by the association head. If you did not join, submit the certificate of income amount from the tax office. For questions about tax certificates, call the National Tax Service at 126.
  • If you just opened a new branch, or have broken the Immigration Act in the past, there may be an on-site inspection.
  • If you have unpaid health insurance premiums, your extension may be shortened to 6 months or less. Pay in advance and keep the receipt.
