Social integration (KIIP)

How does my TOPIK level help with my visa?

Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부), "Guide Manual for Stay Civil Services by Status" (as of 2026.11.02) · Ministry of Justice Social Integration Information Network (사회통합정보망), "KIIP Guide" (viewed 2026.10.29) · Ministry of Justice Social Integration Information Network (Soci-Net), KIIP menu, "Purpose of Introducing KIIP and Benefits of Completion" (checked 2026.10.29)

Your TOPIK level is used as proof of Korean language ability for status changes and points-based reviews. The higher your level, the more points you get. It can also be converted to a Korea Immigration and Integration Program (KIIP) stage.

Where is it used?

  • Residence (F-2) points system: In the basic knowledge category (up to 20 points), TOPIK level 5 or higher gives 20 points, level 4 gives 15 points, level 3 gives 10 points, level 2 gives 5 points, and level 1 gives 3 points.
  • Skilled Worker (E-7-4): You need at least TOPIK level 2 as the Korean language requirement. Instead of TOPIK, you can also prove it by completing KIIP stage 2 or by scoring 41 points or more on the pre-assessment. In the points system, the Korean language score must be at least 50 points.
  • KIIP link: If you have a valid TOPIK level, you are placed in a stage without taking the pre-assessment. Level 1 goes to stage 2, level 2 to stage 3, level 3 to stage 4, and levels 4-6 to stage 5.
  • Basic knowledge for Permanent Residence (F-5) and others: Completing KIIP stage 5 gives you an exemption from proving Korean ability when you apply for permanent residence. TOPIK level 4 or higher links to stage 5.
  • Part-time work (D-2 international students): Depending on your school year, meeting TOPIK level 3 (years 1-2) or level 4 (years 3-4) increases the hours you may work on weekdays.

⚠️ Things to note

  • Each visa type accepts different levels and scores. Check the requirements for the status you want to apply for first.
  • The way you submit also differs by status. For E-7-4, you submit the score sheet only when you prove ability with TOPIK. You can skip submitting a KIIP completion certificate or pre-assessment score report.
  • You need a valid TOPIK level when you apply for the KIIP link.
