What should an H-2 (Working Visit) overseas Korean keep in mind when leaving Korea and coming back?

H-2 has been merged into F-4 (Overseas Korean). Before you leave, first check whether you can change to F-4.

An H-2 overseas Korean with an alien registration does not need a re-entry permit if they return within 1 year from the day they leave. If your remaining period of stay is shorter than 1 year, you must return before your period of stay ends.

Check these before you leave

• Expiry date of your period of stay: If you return after this date, your H-2 status has already ended. H-2 is no longer newly issued, so once the status ends, you cannot enter again with the same status.
• If you will stay abroad for more than 1 year: You must get a multiple re-entry permit before you leave. You can get one for up to 2 years. The fee is 50,000 KRW. Apply through the HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr) e-application or by visiting an immigration office.
• If you stay past the period without a permit: Your alien registration and status of stay can be cancelled.
• Some cases, such as people subject to an entry ban: You may not get the exemption and may need a separate permit.

💡 Benefit of changing to F-4

An F-4 overseas Korean with a domestic residence report does not need a re-entry permit if they return within their period of stay. If you plan a long trip, changing to F-4 before you leave is usually easier.
