Can I leave Korea after applying for an extension, before I get the result?
Based on: HiKorea 'Immigration/Stay Guide' (하이코리아 「출입국/체류안내」) (revision date not confirmed) · 'Immigration Act' (「출입국관리법」) (Act No. 21857, in effect 2026.10.2.)You can usually leave if you can come back before your original period of stay ends. But you should not leave if you plan to return after the expiry date.
You must be in Korea in person on the day you apply for an extension. You cannot apply from overseas or ask someone to apply for you. The right to stay in Korea while you wait for the result applies only while you are in Korea. If you leave during the review, your application may be treated as closed (terminated). If the original expiry date has already passed by then, it may be hard to re-enter on that status of stay.
⚠️ Check these before you leave
- Your return date must be earlier than your original expiry date. If you have completed alien registration, you usually do not need a separate re-entry permit in this case.
- If you get a request for supplementary documents while you are away, you may not be able to submit them in time. First check the progress status on HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr).
- It is not certain how your application will be handled if you leave during the review. It can differ by situation. Ask the immigration office in charge before you leave.
If you have a reason to return after the expiry date, get a consultation with the K-VISA AI administrative agent (Visa Service in the app). Before you set your departure schedule, check once more with the Foreigner Comprehensive Information Center (외국인종합안내센터) at 1345.
