How much is the health insurance premium for foreigners?

Based on: National Health Insurance Service (국민건강보험공단) 「Premium Assessment Standards for Overseas Koreans and Foreigners' Regional Insurance」 (viewed 2026.10.29) · National Health Insurance Service FAQ (excerpts of foreigner-related items, registration date shown for each item) (checked 2026.10.29) · National Health Insurance Service health insurance system guide 'Reduction of Health Insurance Premiums for Foreigners' (first registered 2024.12.31, checked 2026.10.29)

Foreign regional subscribers pay a premium calculated by the same standard as Korean regional subscribers. If the calculated amount is less than the average premium of all subscribers, they pay the average premium. The 2026 average premium is 158,630 KRW per month (including long-term care). So people often call it "the basic 150,000 KRW range."

💡 How your premium can differ

  • Workplace subscribers: If you work for a company, the workplace subscriber standard applies. The amount above applies to regional subscribers.
  • Permanent residence (F-5) and marriage immigrant (F-6): If the head of household has this status, the premium is calculated exactly like a Korean regional subscriber. The rule of paying at least the average premium does not apply.
  • Refugees (C7) or a minor as head of household: You pay the larger of the amount calculated by the Korean standard and the monthly minimum premium.

When you can reduce your premium

  • Reduction by residence status: 50% for international students (D-2), general trainees (D-4) and F-4 students. 30% for religious workers (D-6), humanitarian stay permit holders (G-1-6) and their families (G-1-12).
  • Reduction conditions: Monthly income must be 300,000 KRW or less and the property tax base must be 135,000,000 KRW or less. This is judged by the head of household.
  • Reduction by residence area: 50% for islands and remote areas, 22% for farming and fishing villages, and 28% if you work in farming or fishing in those villages. The maximum reduction per household is 50%.

⚠️ Things to watch when paying

  • Pay every month by the 25th of the previous month. You pay one month in advance.
  • F-5 and F-6 holders pay by the 10th of the next month, like Koreans.
  • If you fall behind on premiums, your stay extension may be shortened to 6 months or less.
