Can I come back in if I leave Korea on a G-1 (Other) visa?
Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부) 「Guide Manual for Stay Civil Services by Status」 (as of 2026.11.02) · 「Enforcement Rule of the Immigration Act」 (Ministry of Justice Ordinance No. 1172, effective 2026.10.23.)Yes. If you are a registered foreigner with a G-1 visa, you do not need a re-entry permit when you return within 1 year of the day you leave. If your remaining period of stay is shorter than 1 year, you must come back within that remaining period.
G-1 (Other) is one of the statuses exempt from the re-entry permit. You do not need to apply separately at the airport. Just carry your Alien Registration Card and passport when you leave and enter.
⚠️ Points to note
- The exemption does not apply after your period of stay expires. Be sure to check your expiry date before you leave.
- The exemption does not apply to people banned from entry or people subject to visa issuance restrictions. In these cases, you must visit the immigration office (Immigration Office, branch or field office) (출입국·외국인청(사무소·출장소)) that has jurisdiction over your residence and get a re-entry permit in person.
- Refugee applicants (G-1-5), people in litigation (G-1-3), and people in wage arrears mediation (G-1-4) may be in different situations depending on their case procedure or whether their departure deadline is postponed. In these cases, check with immigration before you leave.
💡 Good to know
- If you think you cannot return within 1 year, get a re-entry permit before you leave (single entry 30,000 KRW, multiple entry 50,000 KRW).
- G-1 is a status for people staying for reasons such as litigation, medical treatment, or a refugee application. Leaving Korea may hurt your case, so ask the responsible agency or a lawyer first.
Before you leave, check your own situation and expiry date once more at HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr) or the Immigration Contact Center (외국인종합안내센터) (1345).
