ExtensionG-1

When can I apply to extend my G-1 (Other) stay period, and what documents do I need?

Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부) 「Stay Civil Service Guide Manual by Status」 (as of 2026.11.02)

You can apply for a G-1 extension from 4 months before your stay expires until the expiration date. The documents differ by reason (industrial accident, illness, lawsuit, unpaid wages, refugee status, etc.), so check the list below that matches your reason.

Just prepare these documents

Common: Basic documents (application form, passport, registration card, fee)

People receiving treatment for an industrial accident, and their family

  • Diagnosis from the industrial accident hospital — proves you are receiving treatment
  • Notice of medical care plan review decision (industrial accident insurance card) or aftereffects service card — issued by the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service (근로복지공단)
  • G-1 (Other) status review confirmation (Attachment 2 form)
  • Proof of residence — lease contract, accommodation confirmation, utility bill receipts, etc.

People receiving treatment for illness or an accident, and their family

  • Diagnosis stating the need for long-term treatment — issued by a medical institution
  • Documents proving you can pay for treatment and living costs in Korea
  • Letter of guarantee
  • G-1 (Other) status review confirmation
  • Documents proving family relationship — only when a spouse or immediate family member applies together
  • Proof of residence

People with a lawsuit in progress (G-1-3)

  • Copy of the complaint, certificate of lawsuit filing, copy of legal aid decision, etc. — proves your right to claim
  • Letter of guarantee, G-1 (Other) status review confirmation
  • Documents proving family or guardian relationship — family members and guardians only
  • Proof of residence

People in labor office mediation over unpaid wages (G-1-4)

  • Ministry of Employment and Labor unpaid wages confirmation, Korea Legal Aid Corporation (대한법률구조공단) receipt, etc.
  • Lawsuit documents — only for people in a lawsuit
  • G-1 (Other) status grant review confirmation, letter of guarantee, proof of residence

Permitted period

  • Industrial accident: In principle within 6 months. For seriously injured patients, within 1 year.
  • Illness or accident, lawsuit: Within 6 months at a time.
  • Unpaid wages (G-1-4): Extended within 6 months. For people who received a 'grace period for departure,' within 3 months.
  • Refugee applicants: Within 6 months to 1 year each time. For people with humanitarian stay permits, within 1 year at a time until the reason ends.

⚠️ Things to watch out for

  • Apply before your expiration date so you can stay while you wait for the result.
  • Documents differ by reason, so first check which category your reason falls under before applying.
  • Other G-1 subtypes, such as seasonal worker (G-1-19), need different documents.
