What visa do the spouse and children of an F-4 overseas Korean get?

Based on: K-Visa practical reference material "Stay Practice Guidelines" (as of 2023.7.) · Ministry of Justice "Manual for Stay Civil Applications by Status" (as of 2026.11.02) · "Enforcement Decree of the Immigration Act" [Attached Table 1-2] (Presidential Decree No. 36728, effective 2026.10.2.)

The spouse and minor children of an F-4 overseas Korean get the Visiting and Residing (F-1-9) status. It is not Accompanying (F-3).

The spouse and minor children of an F-4 holder stay under F-1-9. F-3 is the status for family members of people in Culture and Arts (D-1) to Specific Activities (E-7, except Technical Training D-3) and Residence (F-2).

💡 Good to know

  • The child must be a minor. Married children are excluded.
  • When you apply, you usually submit documents that prove the family relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.) and the F-4 holder's alien registration documents. The documents may differ depending on whether you apply for a visa or for a stay in Korea.
  • Family members staying under Visiting and Residing (F-1) are, in principle, restricted from working. If you want to work, first check with the immigration office (출입국) whether it is allowed.
