When can I apply to extend my F-4 (Overseas Korean) stay period, and what documents do I need?

You can apply to extend your F-4 stay period from 4 months before it expires until the day it expires.¹

Application period

• From 4 months before your current stay period ends until the expiration day.¹
• If you apply after the expiration date, a fine will be charged.¹

How to apply

1. You or your agent applies at the Immigration Office (출입국·외국인관서, 출입국관리사무소) that has jurisdiction over your address.¹
2. You must be in Korea on the day you apply. You cannot apply or use an agent from overseas.¹

• Integrated Application Form for Overseas Koreans (재외동포 통합신청서) (Attached Form No. 1)²
• Passport and a copy²
• Domestic Residence Report Card (거소신고증)²
• Proof of residence²
• Fee²

⚠️ Things to note

• If you stayed in Korea for 6 months or less during the past year and your main residence is overseas, you do not need to submit proof of residence.²
• If your fines (criminal fines) or fines for violating the Immigration Act in the past 3 years add up to 7,000,000 won or more, your case is handled according to a criminal-record review decision.²
• If your loss of nationality cannot be confirmed, you may be asked for a family register certificate (제적등본) or a basic certificate (기본증명서). If the loss of nationality report is confirmed through the computer system, the basic certificate is not required.²
• In principle, one stay period is 3 years, and this applies if you submitted proof of Korean language ability.²
