Can I not extend my F-2-7 points-based residence visa if my points are too low?

Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부) "Guide Manual for Stay Civil Applications by Status" (as of 2026.11.02)

No. If you have less than 80 points, you are not denied right away. If you are working now and earning at least the minimum wage, there is a grace period that gives you 1 more year. But if you have no income, the extension period is shorter, and you may eventually have to change to another status.

What happens depending on points and income

  • 80 points or more: Extension of 1, 2, 3, or 5 years, based on whichever is better for you, your total points or your annual income points
  • Less than 80 points, but working and earning at least the minimum wage: 1-year extension (grace period)
  • Unemployed or earning less than the minimum wage: You write a pledge letter and get 2 extensions of 6 months each
  • If your income is still too low at the 3rd extension: Extension denied → you can change to Job Seeking (D-10) (up to 1 year, no further extension)

Cases where you can be extended even with no income

  • Potential talent (F-2-7S): 5 years
  • Talent from Korean War participating countries: 3 years
  • People who submit an employment contract because they will work at a listed company, in a promising industry, etc.: 1 year
  • If your income is low because of pregnancy, childbirth, or childcare leave: 1-year grace period from the expiration date

⚠️ Your family is affected too

If your own extension (F-2-7) is denied, your spouse and minor children (F-2-71, F-3-18) are denied too. If you change to D-10, your family can change to Dependent (F-3). Also, you may be denied if you worked in a field with employment restrictions within 3 years before the application date.

If your points are too low and you also have no income, check first with the K-VISA AI administrative agent consultation (the visa service in the app). Always double-check the final rules on HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr) or at 1345.
