‹ F-2 Residence visa guide
Can I change from F-2 (Residence) to another status of stay?
Based on: HiKorea (하이코리아) 「Immigration/Stay Guide」 (revision date not confirmed) · K-Visa practical reference material 「Stay Practice Guidelines」 (as of 2023.7.)Yes, you can. However, in principle your status does not change automatically. You must meet the requirements of the status you want and get permission.
Basic rules
- A change of status of stay is when you stop the activities of your current status and want to do the activities of another status1.
- In principle, you leave Korea, get a new visa, and enter again. However, if you can meet the requirements inside Korea, you may be allowed a limited change after a strict review1.
- You must get permission before you start the new activity1.
How to apply
- Check the requirements and required documents for the status you want1.
- You or your agent applies at the immigration office (출입국·외국인관서) that covers your address1.
A common case: change to Permanent Residence (F-5)
- If an adult has stayed in Korea for 5 years or more with the Residence (F-2) status, they may be eligible to change to Permanent Residence (F-5)2.
- Whether it is actually approved also depends on other requirements, such as income and conduct. Please check the latest guidance for detailed standards.
⚠️ Things to be careful about
- In general, if you change from F-2 to another status such as a work visa, the range of activities you enjoyed under F-2 may become smaller. Compare the pros and cons before you change.
- F-2 has sub-statuses (such as F-2-7, the points-based talented person status), and each has different standards. So even with F-2, the statuses you can change to and the requirements may differ.
- Approval is not guaranteed. For final confirmation, contact HiKorea (하이코리아) (hikorea.go.kr) or the Foreigner Comprehensive Information Center (외국인종합안내센터) (1345).
- If the change is complicated or you were refused before, get a consultation with the K-VISA AI administrative agent (K-VISA AI 행정사) (the visa service in the app).
