Entry & exitD-8

If a D-8 investor travels abroad often, is there any problem with extension?

Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부), 「Guide Manual for Stay Civil Services by Status (체류민원 자격별 안내 매뉴얼)」 (as of 2026.11.02) · K-Visa (케이비자) practical reference 「Stay Practice Guidelines (체류 실무지침)」 (as of 2023.7.)

No. The number of departures itself is not a reason to deny an extension. However, immigration always checks whether the business is actually operating at extension time. If you stay abroad too long, they may become suspicious.

What to know when you leave Korea

You usually do not need a separate re-entry permit. If a registered foreigner re-enters within 1 year of the departure date, the re-entry permit is waived. If less than 1 year of your stay period remains, the waiver applies only within that stay period. So if you leave close to your expiry date, you must return before that date.

⚠️ What the extension review checks

At extension, immigration checks that the foreign-invested company has not been struck off the register. They also check that the company name and number match the business registration and that the business operates normally. If the business is closed or its registration is cancelled, you are given a chance to explain. After that, measures such as cancelling your stay permission can be taken.

So even if you travel often, it helps to prepare the following.

  • Business premises lease contract and office photos — proof that the business site really exists
  • Business performance certificate (such as export/import records) — proof that the business keeps running
  • Tax payment certificate (납세증명서) — proof that you have no unpaid taxes
  • Entry/exit records and documents showing the reason for business trips — to explain long absences (this is the usual way to prepare)

💡 Good to know

  • The longer you are abroad, the more closely they may ask whether the business is "actually operating."
  • If you are subject to an entry ban, you may need a separate re-entry permit.
  • You can apply for an extension from 4 months before expiry until the expiry date.

If you travel very often or stay abroad for a long time, check before your extension at HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr) or the Foreigner Helpline (외국인종합안내센터, 1345). You can also get a consultation with the K-VISA AI administrative agent.
