Can a D-4 language trainee invite family members?

Based on: Ministry of Justice, 「Guide Manual for Stay Applications by Status」 (as of 2026.11.02) · Ministry of Justice, 「Guide Manual for Visa Applications by Status」 (as of 2026.10.19)

No. It is hard for a D-4 language trainee to bring family members under the Accompanying (F-3) status. Accompanying (F-3) covers the spouse and minor children of people in statuses from Culture and Arts (D-1) to Specific Activities (E-7). But the materials do not clearly confirm that Language Training (D-4) falls within this range. The methods below are the ones commonly used in practice. Each case is reviewed individually.

Ways your family can come

  • Short-term visit: Family members who come for 90 days or less usually apply for a short-term visit visa (C-3). Long-term stay and work are not allowed with this visa.
  • Changing your own status to D-2: After you change to a university degree program (D-2), check again whether you can invite family. Each status has its own requirements.
  • Discretion of the overseas diplomatic mission: There is a system where the head of the mission may, at their discretion, issue a single-entry visa with a stay of 1 year or less to family members entering to live with a registered foreigner. However, the eligible statuses are fixed, and approval is not guaranteed.

⚠️ Points to note

  • D-4 is usually a short-term course of 6 months to 1 year. It is not a suitable status for bringing family for a long stay.
  • If you fake documents or state a false relationship to invite family, your application can be rejected. You can also be banned from entering Korea.

If you plan to invite family, first check which method fits your status and period of stay. You can check at HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr) or the Foreigner Helpline (외국인종합안내센터, 1345). If it is complicated, try the K-VISA AI administrative agent consultation (the visa service in the app).
