When can I apply to extend my D-4 General Training stay period, and what documents do I need?

You can apply to extend your D-4 stay period from 4 months before it expires until the day it expires. The main documents are the basic documents and proof of financial ability.

When and where to apply

• Apply from 4 months before your current stay period ends until the expiration day.³
• If you apply after the expiration date, you may have to pay a fine.³
• You must be in Korea to apply. You cannot apply from abroad, and no one can apply for you from abroad. Submit your application to the Immigration Office (출입국·외국인청) that has jurisdiction over your address.³

Basic documents

• Application form, passport, Alien Registration Card, fee [4]
• Documents proving your enrollment or training and your study progress (certificate of enrollment, transcript, attendance confirmation, etc.). Submit these if they cannot be checked in the school information system (FIMS). [4]
• For language training students: the university admission guide or a training plan [4]
• Documents proving financial ability (including bank transaction records for the last 6 months; only deposits in a Korean bank account under your own name are accepted) [4]

⚠️ Things to note

• The D-4 extension rules do not list financial documents separately. However, there is a court ruling that it is not illegal for the review to consider financial ability. So it is safer to prepare them. [4]
• If you stop your studies (take a leave of absence) for personal reasons or because of insufficient credits, your extension may be restricted.²
