ExtensionF-3

When can I apply to extend my F-3 dependent stay, and what documents do I need?

Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부) 「Guide Manual for Stay Civil Services by Status (체류민원 자격별 안내 매뉴얼)」 (as of 2026.11.02) · HiKorea 「Immigration/Stay Guide (출입국/체류안내)」 (revision date not confirmed) · K-Visa practical reference 「Stay Practice Guidelines (체류 실무지침)」 (as of 2023.7.)

Apply for the F-3 extension from 4 months before your stay expires until the expiration date itself. If the expiration date passes, a fine may be charged. You or your agent can apply at the immigration office with jurisdiction over your address (Immigration Office, 출입국·외국인관서/출입국관리사무소).

Just prepare these documents

  • Basic documents (application form, passport, alien registration card, fee)
  • Proof of residence — lease contract, real estate registry copy, jeonse contract, sales contract, etc., and a housing provision confirmation
  • Alien registration card of your spouse or parent — this is an extra document to confirm your dependent family relationship

Documents proving your family relationship (marriage or birth certificates, etc.) are listed as required when you need an extra stay permit such as an extension. Copies are accepted, and official authentication is not needed. Immigration may ask for them, so it is good to prepare them in advance.

Steps to apply

  1. Prepare the documents above from 4 months before expiration.
  2. Book a visit on HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr). Also check whether the service can be done online.
  3. Apply at the immigration office with jurisdiction over your address while you are in Korea. You cannot apply, or use an agent, from overseas.
  4. The fee for a stay extension is 60,000 KRW. Online, you can pay by card, bank transfer, or mobile phone payment. For visits, you usually pay with revenue stamps.

⚠️ Things to watch out for

  • The F-3 permit period is usually set within the stay period of your spouse or parent. Your spouse or parent may need to extend first.
  • If you apply before expiration, you can stay while you wait, even if the result comes late.
  • If visit bookings are full, use HiKorea e-civil service, check often for cancelled slots, or call 1345.

Please check the exact documents and fees once more on HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr) or the Foreigner Helpline (외국인종합안내센터, 1345).
