Can I leave Korea on an F-1 visiting and cohabiting visa and come back in again?
Based on: Enforcement Rule of the Immigration Act (「출입국관리법 시행규칙」) (Ministry of Justice Ordinance No. 1172, in effect 2026.10.23.) · Ministry of Justice Guide Manual for Stay Civil Affairs by Status (「체류민원 자격별 안내 매뉴얼」) (as of 2026.11.02) · K-visa practical reference material, Stay Practice Guidelines (「체류 실무지침」) (as of 2023.7.)Yes, you can come back. If you have an F-1 visa and have completed alien registration, you do not need a separate re-entry permit when you return within 1 year from the day you leave.
If your remaining period of stay is shorter than 1 year, you must return before that period of stay ends. Just carry your alien registration card and passport when you leave.
⚠️ You need a permit in these cases
- If you will be abroad for more than 1 year (up to 2 years): Get a multiple re-entry permit before you leave. The documents are the application form, your passport, and your alien registration card. The fee is 50,000 KRW for multiple entry, and 30,000 KRW for single entry (one return only).
- People subject to entry restrictions or visa issuance restrictions: Even if you return within 1 year, you must visit the immigration office (출입국) with authority over your place of residence in person and get a re-entry permit before you leave.
- Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Iran and Libya have limits on multiple re-entry permits.
Also, you cannot use this exemption after your period of stay has ended. If you plan to be away for a long time, check your expiration date first.
Before you leave, check your own case once more at HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr) or the Foreigner Information Center (외국인종합안내센터, 1345).
