Can I change from E-8 seasonal work to another visa status?
Based on: HiKorea 'Immigration/Stay Guide' (출입국/체류안내) (revision date not confirmed) · Ministry of Justice 'Stay Civil Service Guide Manual by Status' (체류민원 자격별 안내 매뉴얼) (as of 2026.11.02) · National Law Information Center (국가법령정보센터) 'Enforcement Rule of the Immigration Act' (출입국관리법 시행규칙) (Ministry of Justice Ordinance No. 1172, in force 2026.10.23.) Article 86 and [Attached Table 7] <amended 2026.1.23.> (checked 2026.10.30)In principle, it is difficult. E-8 is a status for people who came to Korea for seasonal work in farming or fishing. In practice, there is almost no way to change to another status inside Korea. Usually, you must leave Korea, get a visa for the new status, and enter again.
Changing your status is allowed only as an exception. The basic rule is this: if you stop your current activity and want to do an activity under a different status, you must leave Korea, get the right visa, and enter again. You may be able to change your status in Korea only in limited cases, after a strict review, and only if you can meet the requirements while in Korea. E-8 is a short-term status, and your total stay cannot be longer than 8 months. So it is also hard to meet the requirements for a change inside Korea.
Good to know
- You also cannot do other work. Seasonal workers (C-4, E-8) cannot get permission for activities outside their status (체류자격 외 활동허가) for any activity other than seasonal work.
- Your workplace is limited. You cannot add a workplace. You can change your workplace only in certain cases, such as when your contract ends early because of your employer's fault.
⚠️ Warning
You must get permission to change your status (체류자격변경허가) before you do an activity under another status. If you do an activity under another status without permission, you may have to pay a fine of 500,000 KRW up to 30,000,000 KRW, depending on how long you did the activity. If you want to change jobs or change your status before your stay period ends, check first.
Realistic way: After you finish seasonal work, leave Korea. Meet the requirements for the status you want (for example, work E-9 or E-7, or marriage F-6), get that visa, and enter again. Whether an exceptional change is possible depends on your personal situation.
