Status change

Can I change from E-6 Arts and Entertainment to another status of stay?

Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부) 「Guide Manual for Stay Civil Applications by Status」 (as of 2026.11.02) · K-Visa practical reference 「Guidelines for Stay Practice」 (as of 2023.7.)

Yes, in some cases you can change from E-6 to another status of stay. But the requirements are completely different depending on which status you change to. The materials only confirm changes from E-6 to professional statuses such as E-1 to E-7. For other statuses, it depends a lot on your personal situation.

Requirements checklist

  • I am staying legally and I have registered as a foreign resident
  • I meet the separate requirements of the status I want to change to (for example, E-7) (education, work experience, job type, etc.)
  • I have signed an employment contract with the representative of my new workplace
  • I have the recommendation letter and qualification documents needed for the new status
  • My sub-status is E-6-1 or E-6-3 (E-6-2 is for performances at hotels and entertainment venues, so there are many limits)

Good to know

  • E-6-2 (performances at hotels and entertainment venues) is especially hard to change to another status, and approval from the head office (본부) may be needed.
  • Changing only your workplace within E-6 is not a status change. It is a change of workplace. For E-6-1 and E-6-3, if you meet the requirements, report within 15 days from the day you moved. For E-6-2, get permission in advance when your employer changes.
  • Apply for an extension of stay from 4 months before your stay expires until the expiry date. Make sure it does not expire while you prepare a status change.
  • The fee for a change is usually 100,000 KRW. If you change to permanent residence (F-5), it is 200,000 KRW.
  • Approval is not guaranteed. If it is denied, your stay may be at risk.

Other options

  • If you married a Korean spouse, or if you already meet the requirements of another status (such as E-7), you can consider applying to change to that status.
  • If you do not meet the requirements, first keep your stay by extending your E-6.
