When can I apply to extend my E-1 professor stay period, and what documents do I need?

Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부) 「Stay Civil Service Guidance Manual by Status (체류민원 자격별 안내 매뉴얼)」 (as of 2026.11.02) · HiKorea 「Immigration/Stay Guide (출입국/체류안내)」 (revision date not confirmed) · 「Enforcement Decree of the Immigration Act (출입국관리법 시행령)」 (Presidential Decree No. 36728, effective 2026.10.2.)

E-1 professors can apply for a stay extension from 4 months before expiry up to the day of expiry. If you apply after the expiry date, a fine will be charged. If you apply before expiry, you can stay while you wait, even if the result comes late.

Prepare these documents

  • Basic documents (application form, passport, 1 standard-size photo, fee) — the application form is Form No. 34 (별지 34호 서식)
  • Original and copy of your employment contract — to confirm you still work there
  • Other documents needed for review (1 to 2 types, if needed) — such as a faculty utilization plan (교원활용계획서), student enrollment status, and an earned income withholding record (근로소득원천징수부)
  • Proof of residence — submit one of these: lease contract, housing confirmation letter, stay expiry notice mail, utility bill receipt, or dormitory fee receipt

How to apply

  1. Prepare your documents from 4 months before your stay period expires.
  2. You or your agent applies at the immigration office with jurisdiction over your address (주소지 관할 출입국·외국인관서). You must be in Korea on the day you apply. You cannot apply or use an agent from overseas.
  3. If approved, the permitted period is written on your Alien Registration Card.
  4. The fee for a stay extension is 60,000 KRW. For visit applications, you usually pay with revenue stamps. For online applications on HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr), you pay by card, bank transfer, or mobile phone payment.

⚠️ Things to watch out for

  • If you have unpaid health insurance premiums, your permitted period may be shortened to 6 months or less. Pay in advance and keep the receipt.
  • If your workplace has changed, you must first report a workplace change or addition (within 15 days from the date the reason arose), not apply for an extension.

Check the exact documents again with your local immigration office or 1345. Each university may ask for slightly different materials, so also ask your school's HR department in advance.
