‹ Korea Visa & Stay Q&A for Foreigners
Status change

Who can get a digital nomad (workation) visa?

Based on: Ministry of Justice (법무부) press release: "'1억 연봉' 문턱은 낮추고 체류기간은 최대 3년으로… 디지털노마드 비자로 '지역 활성화'" ("Lowering the '100 million KRW salary' bar and extending stay up to 3 years... 'Regional revitalization' through the digital nomad visa") (2026.07.08)

Foreigners aged 18 or older who work remotely for a company based overseas and have worked in the same field for at least 1 year can get this visa. You must also meet the income requirement. Your spouse and minor children can apply with you.

Requirements checklist

  • You must work for a foreign company and be able to work remotely.
  • You must have worked in the same field for at least 1 year.
  • You must be 18 or older. Accompanying children are an exception.
  • Your income must be at or above the standard based on the previous year's gross national income (GNI) per person. The standard depends on your age and where you stay.
  • You need private medical insurance of at least 100,000,000 KRW that covers hospital treatment and repatriation to your home country during your stay. This was the guidance during the pilot period. Please check whether it changed after the official launch.

The income standard has changed

Before, 2 times GNI applied regardless of age and region. From 2026.6.30, if you are younger or live in a non-metropolitan area or a population-decline (concern) area, a lower standard between 1 and 2 times GNI applies. For example, if you are aged 18 to 34 and do a workation in a non-metropolitan area, the standard is 1 times GNI. Be sure to check the detailed standards by age and region before you apply.

Application and stay

  • You apply at a Korean embassy or consulate abroad (재외공관).
  • If you are in Korea on a short-term stay, you may be able to change status from B-1, B-2, or C-3 if you meet the requirements.
  • Your stay period is 1 year from your entry date at the time of foreigner registration. If you extend by 1 year each time, you can stay up to 3 years.
  • Employment and for-profit activities in Korea are restricted. To work in Korea, you need a separate work visa.

The usual documents announced during the pilot period are a certificate of employment, proof of income (pay slips and bank transaction records), a criminal record certificate, and proof of private medical insurance. If you come with your family, you also need proof of family relationship. Documents may have changed after the official launch, so check with the Korean mission abroad where you will apply.

Check the exact income standard and documents again with your nearest Korean mission abroad, HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr), or the Foreigner Support Center (외국인종합안내센터, 1345).
